It had been a reasonable amount of time now since Q had last been in the field. Not as long as he'd have liked, but long enough that he was a bit more at ease this time around. Hell, he'd even made it through the flight without getting terribly drunk or knocking himself out. If that didn't speak highly of the Quartermaster's current calm, he wasn't sure what would.

It was cold in Tver, not that this part of the globe was ever terribly warm this time of year, and the damp didn't make it any more inviting. Still, they'd made it in one piece, and the city was, really, quite lovely. It was a pity they were here for work rather than pleasure. Still, at least they had a nice hotel room and room service. That made the trip a touch more tolerable.

Q's laptop was currently rebooting after a hard crash- A result of some code work the boffin had been fiddling with- And so he was lingering near the hotel window, looking out at the city as he spoke.

"I've never done a prison break before. ...Well, hostage rescue, I suppose is the more apt term here. I'm almost disappointed I'll have to stay back at the hotel while you go fetch your friend," Q said, pausing, then glancing over at James. "...Almost."

"I'm not. Best to have you safe and in my ear. I'll need you in the systems rather than in the building with me," Bond said, being practical. As with every mission he was in a mind to think through every possible scenario, and it made him just a bit short.

Bond nodded and broke into it, pulling out a box with a Walther and several magazines. There were other cases, other guns, and a box of grenades. It was all quite appropriate for his mission, all useful, nothing too heavy.

"This will work nicely," he said. "How long until your computer is back up and running?"

"Good. The sooner we begin this the sooner we can get to the safe house in Berlin," he said as he fixed his holster under his arm and secured the pistol. He wore tactical gear, black and form fitting. And as he waited for Q's computer to come back to life he opened his suitcase to pull out a prison guard's uniform.

"Do I have papers or are you doing everything digitally?" he asked, sure Q would have the kit he needed. Q branch always did.

He took the card and then fetched the earwig from beside Q's computer.

"Can you hear me?" he asked, being cheeky, then he turned on his heel to go.

Guns secured, extra ammo in tow, he went to the car they'd rented and drove to the prison. It had been agreed the front door was the best way. He swiped his card and nodded to the guard who let him in with barely a look. Bond pulled into the car park but then wheeled around the building to the service doors. He parked there and left the car, not honestly counting on it being there when they got out.

Another swipe and he was in, but though he'd studied the map he needed a bit of guidance.

"Q? Which way from here?" he asked, already taking of straight down the corridor.

Bond followed the instructions and found the office. Once inside he smiled and asked how the men were doing in flawless Russian, any accent trained out of him long ago. They talked a bit, he said he was new, and they laughed a bit about the news. When Bond thanked them and made his exit, he had lifted the key and walked out with the guards none the wiser.

"See? he said out in the hall. "I don't kill everyone. Which way from here?"

"Q? Q? You're breaking up," Bond said, still on the move. His mobile vibrated and he pulled it out, tapped the screen, and it came on but then it stalled and try as he might, the device wouldn't work. He tucked it away.

"This can't be good," he muttered. He closed his eyes for a moment to visualize the map he'd studied on the plane ride and then struck out.

It wasn't the first time he'd had to go it alone.

"Q?" he asked, just trying to keep in contact. The silence in his ear was deeply disturbing. Every now and again he'd get a crisp, clear signal, but not long enough to say much more than, "Q?"

He came to another hall and he looked both ways. To the right was a gate and he made his way to it, using the lifted key to get through. A CCTV camera was aimed right at him. The surveillance in here was to be expected and he could only hope that whatever was causing the interference for he and Q was affecting the cameras too.

"Seven..." And static. "Seven..." And static.

It was deeply frustrating, but the mission had to continue. He needed to free the prisoner. Geoffrey Bingham was too valuable an agent, and Bond wouldn't leave him to this.

He pressed on.

When he found the cell it was dark. All the cells were dark. And terribly quiet. Bond put the key in the antiquated lock and opened the door with a squeaking sound.

He stepped inside, only to find it empty.

And then a shadow fell on him from the hallway.

"Nice to see you, Mr. Bond," came a voice he recognized.

"Kirin Volochenko," the agent replied.

The man snapped his fingers and though Bond couldn't hear Q, he began to transmit once again.

That was when the tazer hit himm and he convulsed and screamed.

Bond was a strong man and accustom to all kinds of pain, but even he couldn't resist the power of 50,000 volts. The shock incapacitated him and Kirin's men entered the cell to collect the rigid agent and drag him off.

They deposited him in a chair in a bare room with a light bulb above him, caged in. Kirin followed after them with a knife in hand.

"Did you like my little surprise, Mr. Bond? I knew you'd come for Bingham. Too bad he's been dead for two days," the villain chuckled.

Bond struggled for breath.

"You lured me here," he said flatly. "Still upset I broke up your arms deal in Afghanistan, then? I should have killed you then," he said. He was still weak and quite sore, but he was ready to fight.

Kirin's men had been holding him in place as the man began torturing him. He'd pulled Bond's head back with a cloth over his face and waterboarded him over and over until Bond was gasping.

But then he heard Q and hope sparked within him.

"What do you want, Kirin?" he asked. "Information? Money?"

"I want to hear you scream, Mr. Bond. Scream like my brother before you killed him..."

He knew what his best chance was. It was chaos.

"Riot," he said simply. Kirin's men were momentarily distracted by the alarm and they relaxed their hold. But the second Bond struggled they held him down again.

"What is that?" one said and Kirin opened the door to look out into the body of the prison.

"Understood," he replied simply. Prisoners began to emerge from cells, aggravated by the alarm. Guards were swiftly overpowered by the mob and a cacophony of shouts and snarling cheers went up. As more and more prisoners emerged, Kirin's men panicked.

"Lock the door," one implored.

Kirin turned to look at him, a glare of pure hatred.

The man's grip vanished as he crossed to Kirin to get past him and close the door. Bond took the opportunity and though he was quite sore from the shock he'd gotten he had the strength and will to rise and draw his gun from under his arm. He shot the closest henchman in the heart. Then he whirled and shot the other one as well. Both dead, it left just he and Kirin.

"Say hello to your brother," he said, then shot Kirin between the eyes. The man fell heavily to the ground.

"All clear," he told Q. "On my way out."

And then he made for the east exit once he'd holstered his weapon. The last thing he needed was for the mob to see a gun and try to seize an opportunity.

"I imagine I should thank you for telling me," Bond said as he set out. He spied a camera and looked directly into the lens as iff he could see Q on the other side of it.

"I'll be back to you shortly," he said, then he made his way down the hall. Just as Q had said, five men were ahead of him. Bond had no time for this sort of nonsense. He did more than hold his own as they attacked him. He fought hard, utterly vicious and completely calm. One by one he broke their necks, leaving a scattering of corpses in his wake before he continued on.

"No, but I could use a drink," he quipped lightly, being cheeky to hide the fact that the electric shock had rattled him. He pressed on.

"Bingham is dead," he said as he passed through another door. "This was all a trap. Are you secure? Are you safe?"
